About This Piece
An extraordinary find — this late Victorian-era rowing machine dates to approximately 1890–1900 and is in remarkable condition for its age. The mahogany and cast-iron construction is characteristic of the premium gymnasium equipment of the Gilded Age. The sliding seat mechanism still operates with satisfying smoothness. The oar handles feature the original turned wood grips. This piece was acquired from the estate of a New England prep school that closed in 1978; it had been in storage and is better preserved for it. Truly museum-quality.
